... the fuck you mean you've had too many teeth broski.
OH well when I was like eight I had an extra tooth that was trying to grow upwards, like, into my nose, so they had to go in and surgically remove that one. smh. it fucked up all my other teeth somehow so then i got braces immediately after. i have really good mouth genetics actually.
#unfort i was EIGHT YEARS OLD#and therefore not capable of taking care of braces#so then they removed them#and then when i was like twelve i had another oral surgery#to remove that flap of skin like? under your lip#just below your nose and above your front teeth?#the place where you get a smiley piercing#yeah i dont have that they cut it out#and then immediately after THAT surgery i got braces again#and then when i was fourteen i had to get a root canal#coz ig my teeth have pits in the backs of them?#which makes it easy for bacteria to crawl up in them? or smth#anyway i had an abscess and a massive infection#was in horrible pain had a fever etc etc and we went to the dr and he said go to the dentist so we went to the dentist#and the DENTIST said i was just being DRAMATIC abt my braces and to ignore it#and then i happened to see my orthodontist like a week later and he was like#yah uh the color on that tooth is weird i wanna xray it#OH YEAH ACTUALLY THERES A HORRIBLE INFECTION. were referring you to an oral surgeron#and then i went to the oral surgeon for the consult and she said mmmm actually im like?#super dupes worried that the infection is gonna move into ur brain and kill u like. literally any minute now so uhhhhh can we do the surger#like#RIGHT NOW??? ill cancel all my other appts#so we did#but then the infection was so bad that it came back so a week later we did a second surgery#but this time they went in thru an incision in my gums to like. scrub out all the infection i guess#and it had eaten away a part of my jaw so i got a BONE GRAFT#and like sixteen stitches#but now its okay :)#i have a gum scar#anyway now my wisdom teeth are doing things lol

pain has veeeeeery suspiciously disappeared from the tooth which makes me veeeeeeeery suspicious bc that’s not good lmfao bc if the pain goes without treatment, it means smth in that tooth has fucking died if I can’t feel anything anymore LMAO. okay if I press hard enough it hurts but it’s nowhere near the sharp ass pain it’s been leading up to this point so! I’m gonna go into that appointment expecting dead nerves and an infection or abscess of some kind. I’m also going in expecting the tooth to get ripped out so! what a day that’s gonna be
#:)#like lack of pain means nerves that were on the fritz the entire time#are not responding anymore#I know this from my tooth hurting. it stops. it comes back. it stops. I get a root canal. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯#mind you the one tooth I did have pulled had a hole so fucking big I’m assuming#it just took the nerves clean out at the start#bc that hole got BIG. BIG. I could put my tongue in that thing I had to clean it out after every meal#and I told the receptionist on the phone yeah there’s a hole and she’s like how can you tell#I CAN PUT MY TONGUE THROUGH HALF THE TOOTH LMFAO#but a different tooth HURT so we fixed that one first dmfnfndj AND GET THIS. ITS THE ONE IM EXPECTING TO BE RIPPED OUT#HAH. A FULL CIRCLE. MAN. THAT WHOLE HUGE FUCK OFF FILLING FOR NOTHING#luckily they cap at a certain amount per financial year so it’s $36 or smth and if I go enough and hit the cap I don’t pay anymore which is#additionally the first pulled tooth was a very back molar also. this one is on the other side and on the lower jaw instead#which Could effect chewing a bit#but like the other one I figure I’ll get used to it. so. it is what it is#I’m willing to just say goodbye I just want a photo of it if possible#bc one root canal was like. a worry. bc of how fucking huge my roots are they worried the filling#would push the tooth in and it’d hit nerves and maybe it would reject. alas that did not happen so!#ooc#can you tell we have good luck with teeth in my family#I’m not the only one with teeth missing and technically with how bad mine are they’re still not even the WORST so! silver linings!

Please help my best friend save their teeth!
Hello, my name is Tulip and I made this blog as a supplementary way to boost the GoFundMe campaign currently underway for my best friend Peyton's dental expenses.
Peyton has been my best friend for seven years now, and for as long we’ve known each other they’ve had to deal with a multitude of dental issues. They were recently able to visit a dentist for the first time in over a decade, and it was only after their broken tooth had gotten so bad, they were unable to eat, sleep, or do anything but try and distract themselves from the pain. We were able to get that tooth extracted, but due to the cost the remaining issues have gone untreated. If they aren’t able to get more work done soon they’ll end up needing root canals for the worst two.
Tumblr media
The priority right now are two teeth-- #19 and #29 in the diagram. Those are the pair causing the most pain and can be fixed with crowns--so long as they're treated ASAP. An appointment has been made for March 18th, with the estimated total coming out at $1,088.60 after the amount covered by insurance. This will be our short-term goal to reach.
I'm sure many of you reading this have personally experienced mouth pain, so you can imagine how hard this has been on Peyton. They've been dealing with most of these since they were still in high school. I don't want them to have to live with this burden anymore or have to give up teeth that can very much be saved! Any amount donated will put us that much closer to bringing them some relief. If you can’t donate, please consider sharing. Thank you for reading!

I am in pain
Hey uh this is kinda embarrassing bc I promised myself I wouldn't need to e-beg anymore after last year's problems but. I have a tooth abscess (picture under the cut) and now I need to get a root canal and an inlay. My health insurance will cover the root canal but not the inlay, which will cost me 536.000 Colombian pesos (around 136 USD) and I can't really cover it rn bc my husband and I are moving apartments this month and most of our meager savings are getting eaten up by the moving costs.
I have a few music commissions lined up but the pain is making it hard for me to focus on them, so progress with them has been kinda slow, so I would appreciate any help I can get to cover at least part of it. Don't feel pressured of course but. In case you wanna toss a couple coins my way.

∆ please help us
we can not afford any of our basic needs
i usually try to keep this as light as possible, but i have put this off for long enough that i have to post this. me and my partner desperately need help. we are just two gay people trying to make it alone here with absolutely no support system. *remaking because the first post died
who we are: im j (or jet), im 24 year old trans guy whose had this account since 2014. i married my partner in 2018, we even met on tumblr when we were younger, we've been together for years. my partner is disabled (diagnosed with autism and seizure disorder and others)
what we need: basic needs, help with vet care, dental emergency assistance and general support. our cat had an emergency surgery two years ago that means he needs to be on a prescription diet (hills urinary food) for his entire life. the vet suddenly said we need to bring him in again to get his prescription renewed and we cant order any more food for him until then, which he will not survive without, and he is not allowed to eat any alternative food without risking his life. we have less than half of a 8 lb bag of it which will not last him through the next month. with the vet, food, and ubers to get to the vet and to the only place they sell the food = 200
to try to summarize our situation, we were kicked out by family and made officially homeless for the first time last year. this is right after we moved across states (wa to az) to support my partners family upon their request, only to be subjected to abuse and kicked out directly due to homophobia in an unfamiliar state after a few months. this left both of us and all of our animals entirely homeless. we luckily have an apartment now but our situation isnt stable. we lost all of our belongings at this time, everything we had built, and have not been able to replace them as we have very fixed income. my partner is especially affected by this situation, as it was traumatizing, and they have just had to power through trauma after trauma because of poverty, more than i can say.
i also have severe and painful dental problems that are not covered by medicaid in az and i have no way to afford. this includes wisdom teeth, root canals, and many cavities that will turn into that crazy expensive treatment if i don't fix it. some may remember my post about this (+this) showing the work i need. i cant keep ignoring it, because they are worried about two of the cavities becoming root canals, and i want to prevent another infection, but thats at least 250 each i also lost a cap and need to replace it to save the tooth, but that's at least 600.
we are still not going to be able to afford rent in future months because our EBT was delayed last month and i had to spend money we don't have, and without student loan forgiveness, my partner will not have loans anymore so we are in serious jeopardy even affording rent, let alone bills. our pets (2 cats 1 small dog) also desperately need vaccinations, which is dangerous to keep going this overdue without with their health problems. our dog has also been limping for the past week and he needs to be seen when that is ever possible, at least 65 plus ubers.
any donations would go first to the vet appointment and cat food, then the other needs in order of priority. will keep updating this, i know its a lot and i really don't expect anything as i know it's well over 1000 for it all, i am begging for help with any of this.
we are both students, we are trying to work towards stability, while being stuck here. i do everything i can to bring in money to support us on my own. we make 200 less than rent is monthly. i am in school to become a caseworker so i am aware of a lot of resources in my area, and have applied for everything, but we can not do this alone which is why i have to ask for help. i am so sorry for having to do this but i appreciate any support that i do have because of this website. you guys literally save my life. helping out other poor people and getting helped out on here has been the most compassion ive ever been a part of. dollars, even pennies, worth of donations has kept my cat safe, has affected me in real ways. it actually matters to us, no matter the amount.
thank you anyone who reblogs, donates anything at all, or reaches out

my current tooth adventure:
have tooth pain back in...june??
haven't been to the dentist in 2 years because i went on medi-cal and nobody actually told me that i can go to the dentist with medi-cal
call every dentist in my town but none of them take medi-cal
use the search on the medi-cal website and find one dentist that doesnt have horrifying reviews online
struggle to make an appointment with this dentist, wait like a week in pain to see her
visit this weirdly disorganized office, get a big filling done (during which the assistant was like 'oh you forgot to do this one thing' to the dentist at one point, good lord)
two weeks later, go back because it hurts more, she says i need a root canal but she doesn't do those and also she wont refer me anywhere
she gives me a mailer that some business in LA sent her like 'try this place' and a print-out of like five different dentists that all had DONT GO HERE reviews online (again, no referral to any of those places so when i called they wouldn't make an appointment without an introductory appointment first)
go to a community dentistry place, have an exam there to tell me the same thing and actually get a referral
go to the new dentist, have a third exam for the same thing, learn i actually need TWO root canals now
wait another week, get the root canals
wait a month to get the caps
repeatedly be told that some residual pain is normal and could take a while to go away
have some pain in one of the teeth not go away after three months (and get worse) and be told that there was probably some piece of root they couldnt see and now i need to see an endodontist
get a referral
they don't take medi-cal
Tumblr media
there are places on the medi-cal website...gonna have to make some calls tomorrow...

dentist update (first time in about 3ish years) - would love input on this if you work in the dental field and notice something amiss here. for the most part this office has done great work, but some conflict between them pushing for more work and my insurance not covering it was a big part of why it took me so long to go back
had a cleaning with no numbing, went ok. Just a few sensitive spots that hurt for a fraction of a second
i thought i had an abscess but I don't (yet)(partially exposed nerve)
I need a lot of work. they want to root canal/post/cap like 4 or 5 of my teeth (I definitely have some rough ones but I wonder how necessary R-P-C's are versus like, just getting a root canal and filling). There are a few "just fillings" that I need though.
I have a broken tooth that needs to be pulled
one of the teeth they want to work on is one they already R-P-C'd but after the x-ray, dentist said there is a "lesion" near the root. I have no pain there but he said maybe it didn't heal properly or something. This is suspect to me considering it hasn't been a problem at all, but he did show me the little dark spot on the xray.
after the cleaning, the dentist pulled out a big filling I had that he said looked like it was about to fall out. He barely tugged at it and it fell out. He didn't give me a temp filling or anything. I asked about it and he told me to just keep it clean until they can work on it. (I was trying to chew on the left side of my mouth to keep food out of the place where I thought I had the abscess on the right, and now I have an open tooth on the left too so I might shove some temporary filler in there until my next appt next week).
curiously, they told me that everything would be covered by my insurance except for the cleaning they'll want to do in 6 months, which isn't too pricey. I expressed surprise to this because a bunch of stuff didn't get authorized last time I was there. The lady said something like "don't be surprised, it's always been covered" which concerns me because a lot of stuff wasn't approved last time by the insurance. So maybe I need their definition of "covered" vs "authorized" or something.
I have another appt next week.
The reason I list all this stuff out is to clarify it all in my head and have a record of what happened that I can refer back to when I will inevitably forget. Also I asked for a copy of the dental plan list and the prices, and the lady told me it would be emailed to me. So far no email.

I'm not at 100% but I am on the mend. I drone on under the cut. I mean I really do. If you read thank you, if not it helps just to get everything out. My dental care the past year has been seriously traumatic.
I had an inflamed tooth that was extracted yesterday. After needing to be extracted for a week. I have medication for pain and infection. Though opioids never seem to help much. Last night I was able to get some sleep and I can chew again. My body has a lot to repair still.
This experience was a blessing in disguise, as odd as it may sound. For those who don't know, I am disabled. Sadly not in the legal sense. I can't get government support, yet I can't work a steady job because of my conditions. To put it plainly, I'm broke and must take what is given. I was without health insurance for a few years before I got medicaid. Medicaid does provide dental care, that is if you can find someone that takes it and is accepting new clients. It took over a year to find someone that was willing to take me on.
My current dentist has been a nightmare. The receptionist is obviously someone who has never struggled with money or her health. The queen bee type even though she must be in her 40s, low-key Karen. She treats everyone as if they are stupid and is extremely judgemental. Though not a major problem, dealing with her reminds me of all the girls that bullied me in my school years. That's still a sore spot for me.
The dental assistant can't take a proper x-ray. I'm not exaggerating when I say every x-ray needs at least 4 attempts. One time it took 7 tries. There is a major communication issue. I spent 15 minutes on the phone with her explaining that my filling fell out and that I can see the hole in my tooth. I don't know what she wrote down but no one knew I was coming in to have a filling redone. She is the go between for the front desk and the doctor and no one knows what's really going on. Every time I have work done she about waterboards me. She also is out of synch with the doctor. The doctor has to prompt her and even then sometimes she doesn't do what she needs to. They usually fight with each other. She is a nice person, but I feel she isn't qualified to do what she's doing.
The doctor is...something. When she isn't doing work on me she is okay and listens to me. When she's doing work she's no non-sense, which I respect, but it doesn't help my anxiety. She tells me to not fight her and to keep my head still. (I'm sorry, I can't breathe and I'm trying to not die but okay. Besides I barely moved, but now you can't see what you're doing because this place is lit worse than Dracula's castle.) She has me bend my neck back in an unnatural position that makes it difficult to breathe. I'm getting blasted with water going down my throat. I'm not completely numbed out, yet I get trigeminal neuralgia that I have to deal with for a week. (That has happened twice.) My tongue will be cut and/or burnt. I've had my lip and chin sliced as well. The entire time I feel like she's either going to yell at me or give up and say, "I can't work on you." I'm good at reading people and I can sense her frustration.
As mentioned, the lighting in there is terrible. The overhead light isn't adjustable or very bright. The chair doesn't allow for the head to gently fall back, hence the awkward pinch neck/pinned back head position that you have to hold. They don't let me see my x-rays or explain things in layman's terms. I haven't memorized teeth numbers as I didn't know that was a skill I needed. They can't seem to say 1st molar on the bottom left, just tooth 19 and I'm supposed to know which one that is. Communication over all is poor. They don't offer a print out of treatment plans so I can just figure it out myself. Their x-rays can't tell them if I need a root canal done on teeth or not. Which reminds me, they don't do root canals because they don't have the machine. They're impossible to get a hold of, they literally don't answer the phone. You have to leave a message and wait for them to get back to you. They don't have an emergency line meanwhile they are closed friday-sunday. Every time I go there I leave feeling stupid, worthless, and ugly. But, they're the only place I can go to for free and I have a lot of dental issues. End background origin.
So less than a year ago I had a filling done. It never sat right, it was overfilled, it hurt, eventually there was a gap, in Dec it fell out, 1 out of 10 bad. They had to redo it and made it sound like it was my fault it fell out. As they worked on me the tool broke. It was an interchangeable part but the new piece didn't fit. So they had to try to get the old one to work again, which they did. But if they couldn't get it working I guess I would just have to deal with an even bigger hole in my tooth for who knows how long. They told me if the pain lasts longer than 2 weeks to tell them. 2 weeks go by and I'm feeling pretty good. Slight soreness, but for a deep filling seems okay. 2 weeks and 3 days later, oh this actually hurts...but it is a major filling, the other one was like this and the pain went away after a few additional weeks. I thought it was part of the healing process as I've heard deep fillings take longer to heal and can be more painful than small ones. A couple more days, holy shit this pain is bad! I need my tooth pulled! I call and get no response, I email and get nothing, I even showed up in person and they were closed. Which is why I didn't get a response. It was during business hours on thursday. They're going to be closed all weekend. I considered going to the ER, but there isn't much they can do besides pain meds while there and antibiotics. I'm in the worst pain of my life. (This is coming from someone who walked on a broken foot for a month before finally admitting to myself it was broke and I should get medical help. I know pain.) Not only that I am worried about infection.
My mom gets and pays for my appointment at a local dentist for the following day as they do emergency appointments even for new clients. They happen to be running a deal this month and the cost ends up $19 for a full consult and extensive x-rays. Which they want to do before doing any work, understandable. Everyone there is pleasant, there's zero judgement. The place is well lit, too bright for me but absolutely needed for them. There is laughing and jokes between the staff. I get my x-rays first. None of them had to be redone. They also can tell which teeth need root canals. Everyone there listened to me and was sympathetic. When I told them my dentist didn't do root canals they were shocked. They showed me my x-rays and explained exactly what was going on with all of my teeth using layman's terms. They gave me multiple options far as saving teeth vs extractions. I told them with how much work was done on the one tooth and how much it hurt, I just wanted it gone. I was reassured that missing one tooth shouldn't cause me problems and all my bottom teeth looked good. They didn't mention how they were overcrowded, just they were healthy. They talked about my top teeth...yeah a lot of work still on those. But they can give me my smile back. I had a couple accidents which have cost me 2 teeth already, a baby tooth that needs to go, and now a days 3 that have major cavities that I could lose. All of which is, well depressing, but I was aware of it all already so it wasn't a shock. A lot of factors have gone in to my teeth but many people see missing teeth and judge. Even if they didn't I feel ugly. The past three years I haven't smiled much and I avoid photos to the point that people comment how great I am at dodging photos. My grandma felt bad and was willing to pay for an implant for my front tooth. Though I still would be missing a lot and thus still feel unattractive. For around the same price I can get a partial denture and have all my missing teeth filled in. My other dentist never gave me that option and wanted to push a bridge that would cost that only covered some of the back teeth. I already planned to go back just for the partial at some point but the extraction sealed the deal.
While they don't take medicaid, they do have a discount program that has a yearly fee of a little over $100. I signed up and already saved $330 on the extraction. Technically $230 if you subtract the yearly fee. It will knock down the price of the denture too. All work gets a discount. It's not free but it's about as cheap as you can get.
Extraction day I'm numbed out and wow am I numb! It's then that it hits me. I never felt that numb for work at the other dentist even with them doing more shots than what was done there. The chair lets my head fall back and I don't have to do the kink neck thing. I can breathe normally. They move the light and it adjusts. It's blindingly bright and they give me sunglasses to wear. The two of them moved so well together I could swear the doctor just had four hands. Anytime he said he needed a tool or suction, she had it covered. She did spurts of water and suctioned it out, none went down my throat. He kept telling me how good I was doing. He apologized a few times and when I alerted him to my tmj hurting on the opposite side he supported my jaw. I know my head moved just because of the force of everything. That wasn't an issue for them. Zero injuries to my tongue or face. Unfortunately, I did still have pain, but I know without a doubt I had the least amount of pain possible. He asked if I wanted any meds, another thing that my other dentist never offers. They are open more hours AND they have an emergency line that can be called.
It was night and day. I felt safe and I was treated like a human being. I will have to talk to my grandma and see if she will support me in getting most of my work done there. I will use the other place to get my two crowns covered and an easy extraction, the baby tooth, then goodbye forever. It's like feeling real love after being in an abusive relationship. I can't believe how I was treated. Maybe if I was in prison I could understand it. Even then I think it's still inhumane. I got a deep cleaning done at the new place as well as some preventative care. There are so many more people there and all of them are friendly and caring. 10/10
I cancelled my cleaning for the other dentist and they got back to me instantly. Hmm...okay, you don't like me cancellin, yet you don't do anything to keep me around. They actually got back to me the night before my extraction. While I was waiting on them I got antibiotics and an appointment for the extraction within a few days. I'm sure with them it would have been a week or more I'd have to deal with the pain.
This discount thing I have apparently has something with vision care as well. My eye care is a very similar story...I should see if walmart takes it because I went to them for years and never had an issue. Well besides the air puff machine punching my eye. That was a one-off thing. This other place, nothing but problems. When you have medicaid you're treated like shit. At least my doctor-doctors and specialists are all wonderful.

Kaoru's Sweeny Todd outfit
A confession I need to vent, its been nearly two years of feeling this way...
Everyone always says Kaoru's Sweeny Todd is like Johhny Depp, but for me, everytime I see him in that outfit it reminds me of my dentist back in England.
My nickname for her was Sweeny Todd! My friends used to call her 'The Butcher'. So, you get the idea...(We always had a severe shortage of dentists back then, there was only one in town at the time, avoided unless you were absolutely desperate)
When I was 20 years old she filled a cavity for me...twice, which got infected inside...twice (the second time was a root canal, I don't know if you can imagine that pain). I called her up, and begged her to help. She said she was full that day, but would fit me in as a 'special case' after hours. I only had to bring someone with me to drive me home.
I took my mum with me. She said I was in and out in 5 minutes. The dentist sedated me as soon as I was in the chair, and then I'm assuming she just grabbed a pair of pliers and yanked, because I was carried out to my mum's car minus the infected tooth, bleeding and still fully sedated within a few mins.
Got home, my mum had to get someone to help her carry unconscious, blood-soaked me into the house. I started to come round, didn't know where I was or who my family were, bleeding everywhere, kept trying to escape from the house. According to my mum, my normally blue eyes were dilated totally black, my face and clothes were covered in blood, and with my crazy behavior it was like something out of a horror movie. I also tried to call a friend to come and 'save me', who later said my voice sounded like I was possessed by demons.
I eventually fell asleep, and woke up the next morning to see my bed and clothes covered in huge blood stains, panicked thinking Id been stabbed, but then remembered that Id been to see Sweeny Todd the night before, and it all made sense! And that was the last time I went to the dentist before I left England.
And thats what I think of everytime I see Kaoru in that bloodsoaked Sweeny Todd costume!! Help me!! 😂😅😂

So went to the endodontist bc I figured it might be worth a shot to see if they can assess the tooth and possibly fix it so I don't have to remove it, or at least confirm that it is in fact not saveable before I go to the oral surgeon. Got there, did a high-quality xray, they can't see a crack but the dark area of the infection is visible, and obvs there's something up with the tooth. They say we can try to redo the root canal and try to save the tooth, but there's a chance it won't be saveable and they'll have to just fill it and send me to the oral surgeon anyway. Had an anxiety attack, cried, texted my mom, made the decision to give it a go and see.
...yeah, there's not enough structure left of the tooth to save it, it needs to be removed and have an implant put in. Sigh. Now I am 3/4 numb still but the painful areas are now Very painful while my tongue and some other areas are still numb, everything aches, and it cost $1200 to do that 🙃 but at least I know for sure, and hey, the post and crown are out of the way at least??
I'm totally gonna need to call out the day after the extraction tho, I would actually call out for my shift tomorrow bc Pain. but we're gonna be too busy. Of course the extraction is the day after inventory and 2 days before new years eve. Yay. And I'm scheduled to work from the day after the extraction thru new years day. Why tf we're closed on Christmas day and Not new years idfk.

i am incapable of judging how comfortable other ppl are with reading about medical issues, sorry if this readmore doesn’t work, this is a needlessly detailed post bc this blog is partly my diary lmao
recap: in October 2022 i had a big fuckin abscess in my upper jaw above one of my rear molars (tooth X), which was incredibly painful and led to the coincidental discovery that my rearmost molar (tooth Y) had to be extracted. tooth X had previously had a crown placed on it, so draining the infection required drilling through that crown, performing a root canal, and then placing a filling over the drill hole. tooth Y was extracted and, over the course of almost a year, replaced with an implant
and then, late in December 2023, i started developing some slowly-building dental pain, seemingly localized to tooth X. last week i finally got around to seeing my regular dentist, who took X-rays and essentially went “…I gotta send you back to the guy who did that root canal, he has a fancier X-ray machine and will be able to see more”
and as it happened he was able to fit me in after only a couple of business days, so this past Tuesday, i went and saw him and he did a 3D X-ray. (ok. side note. this was actually done by an extremely kind, skilled, very pretty technician. which i tell you because “a nice lady tells me what to do” was a pleasant note in this whole lightly-nightmarish sequence of events.) anyway this was extremely cool to look at with him, because explaining what it showed required a bit of a basic course in looking at X-rays, and it was very interesting
unfortunately what the X-rays showed was that there was a dark patch of infection above the root area of tooth X. as he showed me, and explained: after the root canal (which was beautifully done), only the vertically-running nerves had been cleaned out. this probably left a small amount of material in horizontally-running tunnels which would have been impossible to see at the time. that material slowly died over time, leading to the infection. cleaning it out in a way that attempted to save the tooth would be fiddly, complicated work with a low chance of long-term success. yanking it out, on the other hand…
so he referred me back to the oral surgeon who had done my previous extraction — and as i drove home from the endodontist, my mom performed a minor miracle and managed to get me an appointment that afternoon with the surgeon. turnaround is never that fast. it ruled
the surgeon basically had a quick look and went “yup, that’ll have to come out, when do you wanna do it”. as it happens, i am away from work until next Tuesday, so i mentioned that to the scheduler, who said essentially “how’s Thursday [today] work?” and i said “YES”
fast forward to today, everything went much as it had for my first extraction… until i woke up and fuzzily noticed that they were still removing tools from my mouth
what had happened was this: they got in there and extracted tooth X, but noticed that the implant which had replaced tooth Y was attached less strongly than it had been (it was fine at my last post-implant checkup). the theory was that the infection at the root of tooth X had started to weaken the whole area. so, since i was still sedated, they called in my mother (medical power of attorney, for exactly this sort of situation), told her what was going on, and asked her opinion. she agreed with them — as did i once i was conscious enough to understand what had occurred — that it was best to take out the implant as well, let the whole area heal, and place both new implants at the same time
this has all happened over the course of a week from when i decided to drag myself in to go see the dentist 😑
